America's Byways

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm).

Do you like fishing? Hunting? Do you like driving along country roads? Like to see crafters at work? Do you enjoy hiking or cycling through wooded and scenic areas? Or, how about visiting a 100-year-old country store that is still in operation? A water-powered gristmill erected in 1892? An old-time one-room school? If your answer to any of these questions is, "Yes," then you are certain to enjoy a drive along Webster County's Mountain Parkway. The Mountain Parkway consists of a Byway and a Backway, including four spurs, in Northern Webster County. Designation as a scenic Byway and Backway by the West Virginia Department of Transportation was granted on August 2, 1999. The Byway is a 10.4-mile section of West Virginia State Route 20, extending from the foot of Hodam Mountain, at the junction of Hodam Creek Road (Webster County Route 20/8) to the Upshur/Webster County line, just north of Cleveland. The Backway follows Webster County (WC) Route 3, a bit north of the Hacker Valley Post Office to WC Route 1/1, which it follows to WC Route 1; it then follows WV Route 1 to its juncture with WV State Route 20 about one mile south of Cleveland. The four spurs include: 1. WC Route 20/2, an historic route, from Cleveland to Jerry Run 2. WC Route 3/8 from Pugh to Spicer's Orchard 3. WC Route 8 from the Hanging Rocks to the Mollohan Mill 4. WC Route 6 from the Boggs Mill Stone to the Johnson Home The total distance of the Mountain Parkway, including spurs, is approximately 35 miles. We are confident your entire family will enjoy our hills and valleys, Holly River State Park, the villages of Cleveland and Hacker Valley, the Old Sulphur Spring, Boggs Mill Stone, Johnson Home, Wheeler, McCray Rocks, Mollohan Mill and other interesting sites. A friendly and hospitable people are eager to welcome you.
